Student Assessment and Examinations
The aim of the examinations and assessments is to monitor students' knowledge, the level of understanding and learning of what has been taught and their ability to correctly and safely apply the knowledge, methods and techniques using the acquired skills. The methods of evaluation and assessment are laid down in the internal regulations of the College.
The methods of examinations are: Oral, Written, Practical exams, written Assignments (Thesis/ Dissertation) and Case studies. The attendance and participation in class is an essential component of the students continuous assessment.
- The oral examinations during the course of the semester are conducted for the purpose of continuous assessment of the students by the teaching personnel and for monitoring the level of understanding and assimilation of the courses taught. The performance of each student in the oral examinations and the interest shown in the course is evaluated by the teaching personnel.
- The written theory examinations consist of: (a) exams, tests on the syllabus of each course during the semester, for students continuous assessment (b) final written examinations on the syllabus taught at the end of the academic semester
- The practical examinations consist of:
(a) practical examinations on practical applications in the laboratory on the courses taught during the semester for students continuous assessment
(b) final practical examinations on the practical courses taught at the end of the academic semester
Examinations on courses consisting of a theoretical part and practical part (blended teaching) are conducted separately for the theory and separately for practice.
The grade for each course, theoretical or practical, consists of the grade of the course work during the semester (continuous assessment) with 40% weight and the final written/ final practical grade at the end of the academic semester with 60% weight. The pass grade is at least 50%, from their total.
The grade for the continuous assessment (40%) in the case of theoretical courses consists of: oral examinations (10%), written exams/ tests questions covering the course matter of each course, multiple choice, correct- wrong tests and completion of empty spaces (10%), assignments/ projects (15%), attendance/ participation in class (5%).
In the case of practical courses, these are evaluated with practical tests in the laboratory [demonstration of methods of analysis/ evaluation, application of esthetic methods and techniques in providing beauty care/ treatments etc. (25%) and projects and/or case studies (10%), attendance/ participation in laboratory (5%).
The number, the courses and the extent of written assignments are set by the teaching personnel with written and/or oral instructions and they are part of the students’ continuous evaluation. In this way the students become familiar with the collection and processing of information, as well as with the research process and the writing and presentation of written assignments.
The students prepare also a thesis/ dissertation which is compulsory for the successful completion of their prorgam. The minimum pass grade is 50%. The work is carried out under the guidance and supervision of the teaching personnel of each prorgam.
Grading System
Each academic year is divided into two semesters, thus students are assessed and graded on their academic work each semester. Each course (theoretical or practical) is graded from 1-100% with pass mark of 50%.
The grade for each course is composed of the grade for the continuous assessment during the semester (course work) with 40% weight and the grade of the final written or practical examination at the end of each semester with 60% weight. The pass mark is 50% of the total of the above grades.
For a successful completion of the programme of study the students are required to prepare a Thesis/ Dissertation.
